The scorching heat of the summer season is currently at its peak in the capital city. However, on May 17, a severe storm hit the Delhi-NCR region, causing quite a bit of damage across multiple areas. The thunderstorm hit the city along with heavy rains, strong winds, and a dark, cloudy sky. While the rainfall offered a welcome break from the soaring temperatures, it also caused disruption across the Delhi NCR region.
Infrastructure Damages Across The Delhi NCR Region After Thunderstorm
Strong winds damaged the shed at Ashok Nagar Rapid Rail Metro station in Delhi. This part of the Namo Bharat corridor was opened by PM Modi on January 5, 2025, and was called one of the world’s best engineering projects.

Parts of Greater Noida, Noida Extension, and Sector 9 in particular were hit hard by the storm. Several netizens posted videos on social media platforms, showing big trees uprooted and colliding with cars and roads. One particularly worrying video showed a traffic light pole falling near DM Chowk. This accident certainly affected the smooth flow of traffic and added to the chaos.
Despite the destruction, thankfully, no loss of life has been reported so far, according to the Jagran reports. But the damage to property and infrastructure has left people concerned and city authorities busy with cleanup and repairs.
Delhi wasn’t spared from destruction either. Ashok Nagar Rapid Rail Metro station’s roof shed was damaged by the strong winds and rain. A part of the Namo Bharat corridor, this station opened earlier this year. The collapse of the shed affected commuters who rely on the metro for their daily journeys.

Following the initial storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a new alert, warning Delhi residents to anticipate more thunderstorms and rainfall in the coming hours. According to the Jagran reports, temperatures are predicted to range from 40 to 42°C on May 18. On May 19, the temperature will stay between 27°C and 40°C, a slight decrease but still hot. There will also be a chance of light rain, thunderstorms, and occasional winds, along with partly cloudy skies.
The sudden storms are a reminder that the monsoon season is just around the corner, and with it, unpredictable weather will become a part of daily life in NCR.
