The DDA is set to launch a ₹1.2 crore initiative to revive Bhalswa Lake, one of Delhi’s most affected water bodies. The project aims to clean the lake, enhance water hygiene and introduce long-term measures to curb pollution that has accumulated from years of waste overflow. Scroll on to know more about this.
Bhalswa Lake Cleanup Project
Located in Northwest Delhi, Bhalswa Lake is a natural freshwater lake spread across 34 hectares. Originally shaped like a horseshoe, the lake was formed from a meander left behind by the Yamuna River as it changed its course. Over the years, however, rising pollution levels have stripped the once-picturesque water body of its natural charm. To address these long-standing environmental concerns, the DDA has now announced a revival plan aimed at restoring Bhalswa Lake and improving its water hygiene.
According to Hindustan Times, the bioremediation and cleaning project is estimated to cost ₹1.2 crore. The DDA will appoint a contractor to carry out daily maintenance and water treatment over the next year, to improve sanitation and enhance the lake’s water quality near the Bhalswa dump site.

Here’s All You Need To Know About This Revival Plan
While addressing the media, a DDA official explained that the project will focus on the biological treatment of the lake to curb odours, control algal growth, and stabilise key water quality indicators, such as BOD, COD, TSS, pH, nitrates, and phosphates. They will also remove floating plants and waste, including plastic bottles, leaves, branches, polythene bags, and religious offerings, using fibre boats.
Besides the plans in the Bhalswa Lake, DDA will also ensure the cleaning of grass and vegetation along the lake embankments. Hindustan Times reported that laboratory tests of water quality will be done every month to monitor improvements at the site, once the project begins.
We can’t wait to see how this lake revival project will help the Bhalswa Lake.
