Rajinder da Dhaba, one of Delhi’s most iconic eateries, has come under the scrutiny of NGT. They received a petition from the residents who complained that the eatery was violating environmental norms in the area. As per their complaint, Rajinder da Dhaba is illegally using gensets and tandoors in the open. This is causing noise and air pollution in the area. They further stated that they have raised this matter with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) as well. However, they have taken no action so far.

In its order dated May 31, NGT said, “In the complaint, which is enclosed along with the application, the issue of noise pollution has been raised. The applicant has submitted that the generator has been kept by the project proponent unauthorisedly and tandoors are being used illegally in the open area.”

Furthermore, in its order, NGT has directed the DPCC to look into the complaint. They said, “Considering the nature of the grievance, which has been raised by the applicant, we are of the opinion that the complaint which is made by the applicant needs to be duly considered by the Chairman, DPCC, and requisite action is required to be taken after ascertaining the correct position, giving the parties an opportunity of hearing if any violation is found.”

While talking to the Hindustan Times, Onkar Singh, the president of the AB Block Market Welfare Association, said that the Rajinder Da Dhaba has also illegally encroached on a major part of the Safdarjung Enclave market. He further stated that despite its ban, the eatery is using coal-based tandoors for cooking in the open.

Responding to this complaint, the eatery has denied all these allegations. The joint CEO of Rajinder da Dhaba, Shreyank Dua, released a statement addressing this issue. He said, “Our tandoors are gas-based and the gensets are only used as a power back-up. To manage waste, each of our six shops has two dustbins each, from where the Municipal Corporation of Delhi collects waste every night. If waste is not picked up, then it may appear that garbage bags have piled up, but this is a rare occurrence.”

For now, DPCC has not issued any comment on this matter. Also, there are no details of when they will carry out an inspection.
