During the vibrant Holi celebrations, traditional Indian confectionery experienced remarkable demand growth. A report by Scandalous Foods shows a 200 per cent increase in Shahi Tukda orders and a 125 per cent growth in Mawa Gujiya sales compared to previous seasons. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this particular report on the sales of traditional Indian festive sweet treats.
Demand For Shahi Tukda Rises By 200%, Gujiya By 125%
The exceptional performance of Shahi Tukda coincided with the Ramzan festivities. Mawa Gujiya maintained its position as a beloved Holi treat, particularly in regions with significant North and West Indian populations.
This surge reflects a broader consumer trend towards rich, culturally significant desserts deeply rooted in festive traditions. Ras Malai, another Scandalous Foods bestseller, continued to dominate sales. This highlighted the sustained popularity of milk-based desserts as preferred after-meal indulgences.
“Traditional sweets have deep cultural significance, with distinct regional preferences driving consumer choices,” explained Sanket S., Co-Founder of Scandalous Foods. “Mawa Gujiya gained remarkable traction in Western and Southern regions, likely due to North and West Indian professionals who have relocated there. Meanwhile, Shahi Tukda has established itself as a timeless dessert enjoyed year-round.”
Surge Sweets Sales During Holi Season
The company noted stronger Mawa Gujiya demand in Western and Southern markets where they maintain a robust presence, whilst Northern regions presented more competitive challenges.
“Shahi Tukda remains available throughout the year, but Mawa Gujiya is a seasonal offering that peaks during Holi before being discontinued. Our priority is delivering premium, culturally relevant desserts that enhance our institutional partners’ menus,” Sanket added.
This demand surge represents a broader trend towards heritage-inspired desserts in mainstream dining. With over seven million restaurants across India, businesses have substantial opportunities to introduce and scale traditional confectionery.
