The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken firm action against Air India following multiple instances of crew duty violations that risked safety standards. The national carrier has suspended its head of crew rostering. The regulator found evidence suggesting crew members were rostered for flights without receiving adequate rest. This move comes amid growing concerns over operational fatigue and non-compliance with mandatory crew duty regulations.

DGCA Initiates Air India Safety Audit After Alert

According to The Economic Times, the DGCA initiated an audit after receiving reports of safety violations involving Air India’s crew scheduling system. The regulator found that several crew members were not given sufficient rest periods before being assigned flights, a breach of the safety standards required under Indian aviation norms.

The DGCA’s findings came to light after it conducted a detailed review of flight data and internal rostering systems. It was observed that the rostering process repeatedly assigned duties in a way that disregarded the minimum rest time required between flight operations. Such lapses can increase the risk of crew fatigue and compromise passenger safety.

Internal Action Follows Regulatory Scrutiny

Following the DGCA’s report, Air India has taken internal disciplinary action. The airline suspended its head of crew rostering to facilitate further review and accountability. As reported by The Economic Times, the DGCA has issued a formal show-cause notice to the airline, demanding an explanation and corrective measures.

The issue has raised broader questions around compliance culture within Air India, especially in the context of safety-sensitive operations. The regulator is continuing to monitor the airline’s crew rostering practices and is expected to take further actions if necessary.

Air India Faces Reputational And Operational Impact

The scrutiny by DGCA may affect Air India’s standing as it undergoes transformation under the Tata Group. Operational delays and reputational damage are potential consequences if safety compliance issues persist. The airline is likely to review its scheduling systems and implement more rigorous checks to prevent similar violations in future.
