Did You Know South Korea Has A Grilled Corn Ice Cream Where A Scoop Is Served On A Bhutta?

Grilled Corn Ice Cream

There’s nothing quite as comforting as sinking your teeth into a hot, freshly roasted bhutta on a rainy day. The charred, smoky taste of the corn on the cob, the punchiness of the lime and the zinginess of the masala make it a beloved street snack in India. Beyond our streets, grilled corn has fans in South Korea as well. In Jeju Island, the street snack is savoured with a sweet twist. And it’s nothing like you’d expect!

South Korea’s Jeju Island Serves Grilled Corn Ice Cream

South Korea’s Jeju Island has a Grilled Corn Ice Cream that’s catching the fancy of both locals and tourists alike. A bizarre culinary combo, this ice cream is a melange of sweet and savoury flavours. Introducing the internet to the South Korean speciality is digital creator, @coffeegomi. This corny delight is served at Jeomjeom, an ice cream parlour on the island.

To prepare the unique ice cream, a charred corn on the cob acts as a cone. It’s then topped with a corn-flavoured soft serve. Hold the corn on the cob, and slurp on the savoury soft serve. Later, bite into the smoky kernels that add that much-needed punch to the dessert. Priced at 7,500 won ( ₹470 approx.), this ice cream promises to tantalise the taste buds of those who have a fancy for the good ol’ corn. The content creator describes the taste of the Grilled Corn Ice Cream to be sweet, creamy and nutty.

Corn Has Featured In Numerous Desserts

Adding corn to a dessert is not a novel idea that’s limited to South Korea’s Jeju Island. In some American households, corn is stewed with butter, milk and a thickening agent to prepare a decadent Corn Pudding. It’s a Thanksgiving staple. Another dessert featuring corn would be the Sweet Corn Pie, where the sweet notes of the corn act as a perfect stuffing in a crusty pie. Similarly, while it seems novel, corn ice cream has been spotted in speciality ice cream parlours across the globe, often hailed for its complex yet innovative notes.
