The dabbawalas of Mumbai have been a crucial part of the city’s culture. So many people who work constantly and who don’t have the time to cook rely on them for sustenance. They provide affordable, hygienic and home-style meals that are nutritious as well as tasty. You would be hard-pressed if you tried to find an alternative that is better than Mumbai Dabbawalas. Now, in order to adapt to these digital times, they, too, have gone digital!

According to an article recently published by The Times Of India, the Mumbai Dabbawalas, instead of just delivering the meals, are also going to cook it. For more than 130 years, the dabbawalas have been providing exceptional delivery services.

They are now equipped with a fully functional website that lets you order food online for your next day. The Dabbawalas have partnered with Self-Help Groups of women who are looking for a source of income by selling food. The TOI article mentions that they are currently partnering with a women’s SHG which is based in Borivali.

According to Ritesh Andre who is a spokesperson for the Mumbai Dabbawalas, they initially thought about setting up a cloud kitchen in Saki Naka. However, it soon became apparent that delivering meals city-wide would be a mammoth task from a centralised kitchen.

They, therefore, opted for a decentralised. They also have an app that you can download and use on your phone. Their website, dabbawalaskitchen.com is easy to operate and quite straightforward. You can choose from a vegetarian or alternate meal option.

Prices vary from ₹95 to ₹125. You can pick between a mini meal or a regular meal. You can place an order as late as 6 PM for lunch the next day. You can also see the menu and what you’re going to get in the tiffin.
