Digital Nomad Visa: Taiwan To Soon Open Doors To Global Professionals With Six-Month Scheme

Taiwan has recently introduced a digital nomad visa scheme, becoming the latest country to join the trend of offering such visas. This new scheme allows remote workers to live and work from Taiwan for up to six months. The move aims to attract global talent and make the destination a desirable destination for digital nomads.

Unlike some of its East Asian counterparts, Taiwan is not aiming to outshine them but rather to complement their offerings. Remote workers who have spent their six-month visa period in Japan, for instance, can now consider Taiwan as their next destination. This approach provides flexibility for remote employees who wish to explore multiple countries.

Currently, remote workers in Taiwan can only rely on visa-free entry or a standard tourist visa, which restricts their stay to three months. The new digital nomad visa will significantly enhance their options. However, the scheme will only be available once it receives approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Similar Schemes In Other Asian Countries

The introduction of this visa is part of a broader effort by Taiwan to attract skilled and high-income professionals. Alongside the digital nomad visa, Taiwan is simplifying the process for obtaining permanent residency, making it an appealing choice for those looking to settle down long-term.

Taiwan’s initiative aligns with similar schemes in other Asian countries. Thailand, for example, has launched the ‘Destination Thailand Visa’. This visa allows remote workers to stay and work in the country for up to 180 days, with the option to extend for another 180 days for an additional fee. Thailand’s scheme is designed to boost tourism and offer a flexible working environment for digital nomads.

Japan also offers a digital nomad visa, permitting remote workers to stay for up to 180 days. This visa is available to individuals from 49 countries and territories, including several EU member states. Japan’s programme supports its goal of fostering international collaboration and attracting global talent.

South Korea presents a unique option with its Workation Visa. This visa permits remote employees to stay for up to one year, with the possibility of extending their stay by an additional year. This extended duration provides a significant advantage for those seeking a longer-term remote working experience in South Korea.
