Have you ever dreamt of visiting the magical Walt Disney World Resort? Or have you already been there and loved the experience of treating your inner child? Well, not many know that it has been built on acres of swamp. Yet, there are no mosquitos! Ever wondered why? Well, the reason for this is explained below, so scroll on as we spill the secret.
Walt Disney World Resort Has No Mosquitos?
Despite being built in the swamp lands of Florida, Disney World doesn’t seem to have any mosquitoes, even on a hot summer day. While most of you might not have noticed, there is an interesting reason why there are new irritating blood-sucking bugs in this magical place. Major General William Joe Potter, an MIT graduate and engineering expert, is the reason why you don’t have to face these pesky bugs.
He met with Walt Disney in 1964 at the Worlds Fair and they got talking, wherein the former mentioned his background in controlling mosquitoes. As a result, Walt Disney hired and put him in charge of ridding this magical theme park of mosquitoes, when it was still in the planning stage.
From Constantly Flowing Water To Garlic Spray
If you are wondering how did this man achieve this mammoth of a task, then it’s quite simple. First, he drained the swamp lands from the standing water by building drainage ditches. As a result, the swampy land was now buildable and these ditches later came to be known as Joe’s Ditches. Additionally, water is constantly flowing here, this was the second step in the process. As mosquitoes need still water to lay their eggs, William removed this possibility by ensuring water is constantly moving.
As it happens even the ponds at Disney World are home to fishes that feast on mosquitoes! In fact, even all the plants that were chosen to beautify the area had mosquito-repellent properties. Finally, instead of using pesticides, liquid garlic spray is used in minute amounts to ensure there are no pesky mosquitoes to dampen your spirit.
Doesn’t that sound ingenious? Well, go ahead and plan to visit this magical place if you haven’t already!
