No Sky Lanterns To Light Up Mumbai Skies This Diwali
Mumbai Police has issued a ban on the use and sale of sky lanterns in the city till November 21, 2024. According to Mumbai Live, the city police feel sky lanterns “could pose a grave danger to lives and damage public property.” They have invoked these prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The order issued by Akbar Pathan, DCP (Operations), Mumbai Police, said, “It is necessary that some checks should be put on flying lanterns activities, use, sale and storage of them in the Mumbai Police Commissionerate, to prevent the activities of antisocial elements through such type of lanterns during the said period in Mumbai and that immediate action is necessary to prevention of the same.”
This ban has been prompted on the request of former Mumbai fire chief, P Rahangdale. As per reports, he requested the police to ban such lanterns after a flying sky lantern had started a fire in a 36-storey under-construction building in Malad East. The incident took place in January 2015.
