Despite the additional prefix of ‘diet’ to its name, these soft drinks are not really healthy, especially if you’re consuming them on a regular basis. They tend to have a negative impact on your body in the long run and here are some health complications that you should be aware of if you consume diet soft drinks often.

If you think drinking diet soft drinks on a regular basis is okay because of its low sugar content, then we’re sorry to burst your bubble! While it is true that regular soft drinks contain a lot of sugar that can be harmful to your health, diet soft drinks also tend to hamper your well-being in the long run.

According to a ScienceAlert report, people who drink diet soft drinks regularly and often are more likely to develop certain metabolic conditions. With regular intake, they also increase the chances of developing health issues like diabetes and heart disease.

As per a Financial Express report, in 2023, the WHO found that sweeteners used in diet soft drinks could be carcinogenic to humans. As per the report, the sweetener, aspartame, may increase the risk of cancer if consumed regularly. However, there is not enough scientific evidence yet to prove it.

Over the years, the WHO has advised people that artificial sweeteners should not be used to manage weight as they may not directly help manage weight over the long term. So, it is definitely not okay to drink such drinks on a daily or regular basis!

Here are some health complications that you should watch out for if you drink diet soft drinks regularly –

1. The artificial sweeteners in these drinks may irritate the lining of the digestive system. This can lead to inflammation, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and other issues associated with irritable bowel syndrome.
2. A well-known fact is that these beverages can cause dental erosion and diet ones are no different! It might not have sugar but it is still highly acidic that can hamper your dental health.
3. Regular intake of such drinks can also decrease your bone density as they contain caffeine and phosphoric acid.
4. It may also cause type 2 diabetes. Although they don’t have sugar or carbs, they can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

While occasionally drinking soft drinks is okay, having them on a regular or daily basis can be an issue. So, keep this in mind and be careful about what you eat and drink to maintain a healthy and longer life!
