Do You Have To Pay ₹30 For Extra Baggage In Bengaluru’s Namma Metro? Here’s The Truth!

A Bengaluru man recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to flag that he was charged an additional ₹30 to carry luggage in Namma Metro. In the post, he even shared a picture of the trolley bag with a ‘Luggage Ticket’. The post has since sparked a debate, with netizens divided on whether the charges are acceptable or not. Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Charges Luggage Fees?

Avinash Chanchal took to X to share how he was charged ₹30 for oversized luggage while commuting on Bengaluru’s Namma Metro. In the post, he shared that he was asked to pay extra for carrying a suitcase during his ride. He said that despite Bengaluru Metro being the “most expensive in the country”, they are levying such charges.

He added that such additional charges “adds to the burden” of the commuters.
Avinash added pictures of the bag as well as the ‘Luggage Ticket’ that was charged for it. The sticker on the bag said, “Purchase ‘Luggage Ticket’ for this luggage for ₹30 at Customer Care Centre.” According to him, such additional charges excludes “people from accessing the metro.”

Claim Sparks Online Debate

As you can imagine, the post sparked a debate online with netizens divided on whether such luggage charges are justified for public transport like the Bengaluru Metro. Many people agreed with Avinash and said that such charges should not be applied for public transportation, while others disagreed.

Comparing it with Capital’s metro services, one user said, “Delhi metro has not charged a single penny for luggage since their operations started.”

One comment on the post read, “Honestly would be okay with the charge if they had dedicated bag storage. But paying extra just to… hold it?”

“The metro launched in Bangalore should make it affordable for everyone, not overcharge and burden commuters,” someone commented.

“It is reasonable,” another X user commented.

Disagreeing with Avinash, someone commented, “Just quite moaning over here. If the bag is bigger than what can fit in the scanner you have to pay for it, if not you can just carry it around. I have travelled multiple times with 1 smaller suitcase and another bag along with my backpack and all of them fit through the scanner. No one has ever stopped me or said I have to pay. I even checked with the staff if I needed to pay and they confirmed I didn’t have to as the bags were within size limits. Now think about the inconvenience you are causing the other passengers by carrying a large suitcase with you. In my case I just stash my bag and suitcase under the seat so that it doesn’t cause inconvenience to other passengers while travelling in the train.”

“I had to pay ₹30 in the Bangalore metro for this bag–₹30 is expensive? We have the world’s lowest metro fares across India,” one netizen commented.
