The fabulous Ali Fazal was on an exceptional food trail on Carter Road with our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, for one of our episodes of Tere Gully Mein. He debuted in Bollywood with Rajkumar Hirani’s fantastic film, ‘3 Idiots’, as the heart-touching character of Joy Lobo. Since then, it has been onwards and upwards for him. In this episode, we talked about his family, childhood, theatre days and more. Check out where he spent more of his childhood days in.
Ali Fazal’s Childhood Was Spent Here And Not In Delhi
We stepped into the famous restaurant, Mezbaan, for some delicious chicken shawarma. Kamiya began conversations about Ali’s childhood and hometown. She was interested in his growing-up years and as Wikipedia didn’t offer much information we asked the actor in person.
Ali Fazal said, “I have spent my childhood in Lucknow; Wikipedia is wrong about certain things. I was in Lucknow till 7th standard, then I shifted to Dehradun for the remaining years of schooling. Lastly, I joined St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai for Economics.”
This clarifies the air about him spending his youth days in Lucknow and not in Delhi. Hence, he was fortunate enough to enjoy his hometown, Lucknow, and the pristine hills of Uttarakhand before moving near the sea to embrace the fast-paced life of Mumbai.

His Initial Years In Mumbai
Ali continued talking about his life in the City of Dreams and how he pursued a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Economics despite being from a science background. He shared that during his college years, he enrolled in theatre groups and did a handful of plays. It was during the second year of his Master’s Degree that he began shooting for his debut film, ‘3 Idiots’.
Ironically, a real-life hardworking and brilliant Master’s student was portraying the role of a reel-life college student, Joy. Joy couldn’t pass his exams and ultimately took his life. The superb acting by Ali touched every audience’s hearts and people recognised him from this first blockbuster movie.
