Delhi Public School (DPS) in Noida has recently stirred controversy with its new circular asking parents to avoid sending non-vegetarian items in their children’s lunch boxes. The school, in a move described as a “respectful request,” has faced significant backlash from parents who view this as an undue interference in their dietary choices.

The circular, issued by the principal’s office on Wednesday, outlined two primary reasons for the request. Supriti Chauhan, the principal of DPS-Gautam Buddh Nagar in Sector 132, defended the circular in a statement on Thursday. She emphasised that the request was not a directive or ban but merely a suggestion.

“This is not a diktat, but only a request. We issue such a circular every year and this year’s is nothing new. There is no ban, no directive, no advisory…only a respectful request,” Chauhan stated, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Two Key Considerations

The circular provided two key considerations for its request. The first was Health and Safety. It noted that non-vegetarian food, when cooked in the morning, can pose serious health risks if not stored and handled properly. The school stressed that it prioritises the health and well-being of its students.

The second consideration was Inclusivity and Respect. The circular argued that maintaining a vegetarian food environment would help ensure that all students feel respected and comfortable, regardless of their dietary preferences or restrictions. This approach, it claimed, fosters a more inclusive atmosphere during mealtimes.

Despite these explanations, the circular has generated a substantial amount of backlash from some parents. Critics argue that the request is an overreach into personal and cultural choices. Supporters of the request argue that it promotes a more harmonious environment by aligning with the school’s values of inclusivity and respect.

The DPS circular has ignited a heated discussion about dietary preferences and school policies. The school’s request for a vegetarian-only lunch box policy has met with both support and criticism, reflecting broader debates about cultural sensitivity and personal choice in educational settings. It remains to be seen how the school will navigate these issues and whether any adjustments will be made in response to the concerns of its diverse parent community.
