Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has set the stage for the future with its latest venture. In collaboration with the private sector, they have launched a trial operation of an electric abra crafted using 3D printing technology. This cutting-edge abra can ferry 20 passengers while preserving the charm of its traditional counterparts. This initiative aligns with Dubai’s 3D printing strategy, aiming to slash manufacturing time by 90%, reduce costs by 30%, and trim operational and maintenance expenses by another 30%. This newly minted abra boasts several impressive technical features. It sports the longest monocoque structure ever created using 3D printing, measuring 11 metres in length and 3.1 metres in width. Equipped with an electric propulsion system powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries, this abra is ready to make waves at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line. During the trial phase, the abra’s performance will be meticulously compared with the current 20-passenger fibreglass abras.
To enhance marine transport services, the RTA is upgrading the traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek. This project aims to improve safety and security standards, adhere to the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination, and enhance the overall aesthetics of these stations. Over 14 million passengers use these traditional abras each year, making this upgrade a significant step towards a more efficient and inclusive transport system.
