If you’re craving something extraordinary, hold onto your chopsticks. Acclaimed Chef Ross Shonhan is bringing a unique experience to the heart of Abu Dhabi. Celebrated for his daring ventures like Netsu Dubai and Bone Daddies in London, Strawfire, his latest culinary marvel, opens on 15 November 2024. Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental will soon welcome the restaurant with a concept rooted in Japan’s ancient Warayaki technique. Want to know more about the technique? Keep reading!

What Is Japan’s Ancient Warayaki Technique Coming To Abu Dhabi?

Japan’s ancient Warayaki technique, where strawfired flames imbue food with deep, smoky flavour, Strawfire promises to be a game-changer. Get ready for a dining journey that blends fire, flavour, and elegance. At Strawfire, the traditional meets the exceptional. Warayaki, a cooking method from Japan’s Kochi Prefecture, involves flames fuelled by straw, giving each dish a unique smokiness. This isn’t just cooking; it’s theatre. As diners settle in, they’re treated to a fiery display at the open grill, where fresh ingredients are charred to perfection. From à la carte options to a Chef’s Omakase menu, Shonhan’s selections highlight the best of land and sea, honouring the rich essence of Japanese cuisine.

In addition to food, Strawfire has created a unique ambience. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the Tsukimi Lounge, a moonlit space inspired by the tranquillity of a Japanese harvest. Then, there’s the main dining room, where an open flame grill takes centre stage, adorned with golden drapery and artisan Kumiko panels. Each area has been meticulously designed to make diners feel they’re entering a sanctuary of Japanese tradition.

An Artful Tribute To Japan’s Heritage At Strawfire, Abu Dhabi

Strawfire isn’t just about taste, it’s about transporting guests through art, culture, and history. The Toyama Private Dining Room is a nod to Japanese craftsmanship. Its centrepiece is a striking 7.3-metre Shimenawa rope, symbolising sanctity and crafted in Toyama before its journey to Abu Dhabi. The room’s walls showcase hand-painted silk inspired by Japanese art masterpieces, including 17th-century treasures like In and Around the Capital and works by Hiroshige and Hokusai. This artistic dedication offers a dining experience that’s as visual as it is culinary.

And for guests seeking entertainment, Strawfire adds a modern twist. Live jazz bands elevate Friday and Saturday nights, complemented by DJs spinning Jazzy House and NU Disco, ensuring the vibe is both refined and vibrant.
