If you’ve been in Hyderabad for a considerable period of time, chances are that you’ve heard of Subhan Bakery and their Dum Ke Roat. First established in 1948, Subhan Bakery has travelled a long and arduous journey. Despite this, the bakery has carved a niche for itself. After more than 76 years of churning out doughy delights like Kharis, Osmania biscuit, and Roat, it has become an indelible presence in the city of pearls.
This Bakery Was An Essential Part Of Jawaharlal Nehru’s Breakfast
The bakery was founded by Syed Khader. Prior to establishing this legendary bakery, he worked in Kalasiguda in Secunderabad at a bakery that supplied bread to the British regiment. Then, he moved to Red Hills and started selling bread from a small garage.
His venture soon took off and the bread he sold gained renown. Soon, he moved to Nampally where he set up Subhan Bakery, named after his son. This upgrade brought with it a diversity of products. Instead of just bread, they started selling Osmania biscuits, cakes, and other confections.
Their bread, though, retained its popularity. When Jawaharlal Nehru visited Hyderabad in the 1950s, he made it a point to have their bread at his breakfast tables every day. This cemented their legacy in Hyderabad and even the Nawabs were known to purchase their bread.
Hyderabad’s Subhan Bakery And Their Journey From Bread To Dum Ke Roat
Among the most popular of their baked items is the Dum Ke Roat. For those who may not be aware, roat is a baked item that is not quite a cookie and not quite a cake, but somewhere in between. Its texture is firmer and denser than that of a cake but it is softer than a cookie.
In addition to this, they also have around 15 types of biscuits that are known for their distinctive texture. Perhaps one of their biggest achievements is that they also opened in Riyadh where loyalists from far and wide queue up for a familiar taste that harks back to the streets of Hyderabad.
