The cargo line was formally inaugurated in February by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
There are more than 1,000 wagons and a fleet of 38 engines in it. In the long run, it will link the Emirates to the rest of the Gulf as a key component of the UAE’s national rail initiative.
Apart from the freight, passenger services will soon start reflecting on the tracks of Etihad Rail. Together, they will cover about 1,200 kilometres and cut carbon emissions by up to 80%.
The officials previously announced anticipate the commencement of passenger services in 2030 but a specific date is yet to be released. Also, Etihad Rail is estimated to serve 36 million people annually.
