On the International Day of Happiness, March 20, the UN released its World Happiness Report for the year. Claiming the title for the seventh time, Finland topped the list yet again! Interestingly, this year’s list saw few new entries on the top 20 list of the happiest countries. Scroll on to know all about them.
Finland Maintains Its Top Spot As The Happiest Nation
As per the UN’s World Happiness Report, Finland has maintained the top spot as the happiest country in the world. This is the seventh time this European nation made it to the top of this list. Following Finland closely, Nordic countries like Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden have all emerged in the top spots at second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.
The happiness index this year saw some major drops and new entries. For starters, the United States and Germany did not make it to the top 20 list. The US ranked 23rd, while Germany was placed in the 24th position. This year’s index saw new entries like Costa Rica and Kuwait in the top 20 list.
What’s interesting in this year’s happiness index is that no large country made it to the top 20 list. All the countries in the top 10 position, besides the Netherlands and Australia, have a population of less than 15 million. Similarly, no country with a population of more than 30 million, except the UK and Canada, made it to the top 20 list.
Furthermore, the UN report found the “sharpest decline in happiness since 2006-10 in Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Jordan.” The report further found the biggest increases in the happiness index in Eastern European countries Serbia, Bulgaria, and Latvia. Meanwhile, India maintained its rank from last year at the 126th position.
