Assam and Manipur continue to reel under severe floods amid heavy rainfall in Northeast India. Assam & Manipur Flood Situation Amid Heavy Rainfall

The flood situation in Assam and Manipur is getting worse. The two Northeastern states have reported 48 flood-related deaths till Wednesday. 46 of them were reported in Assam and two in Manipur. And there seems to be no relief anytime soon as heavy downpour continues in this region.

As per The Indian Express, the floods have affected about 16.25 lakh people across 2800 villages in 29 districts in Assam. Nagaon, Darrang, and Karimganj in the Barak Valley are some of the worst affected areas in Assam. Over 3.86 lakh people have taken shelter at relief camps and distribution centres. The authorities have set up 515 relief camps in the flood-hit districts.

In Manipur, over 2,000 people have been evacuated from heavily flooded areas. As per a Hindustan Times report, flood waters have damaged hundreds of roads, dozens of bridges and thousands of houses across both Manipur and Assam.

IMD’s Prediction & Rescue Operations By Army

The Indian Army, Assam Rifles, state police, Manipur Fire Service, NDRF and SDRF personnel, and local volunteers have all come together for rescue and relief operations across Assam and Manipur. They are using boats to rescue people in flood-affected areas. They are distributing packaged water bottles and food packets in these areas. As per the Hindustan Times report, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have also sent manpower to advance relief efforts in Assam and Manipur.

Amid Assam and Manipur floods, IMD has issued a red alert for all Northeastern states this week. As per the latest update on their X (formerly Twitter) account, heavy to very heavy rainfall spell likely over Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya till July 6.

We hope the situation improves in Manipur and Assam soon. We pray for the safety of the people and hope that the rescue teams are able to help them soon.
