In the heart of Indore’s vibrant Sarafa Chowpatty, amidst the tantalising aromas of street cuisine, a remarkable food performance has been captivating visitors for 15 years. This is where Omprakash Joshi has transformed the humble dahi vada into a gravity-defying spectacle known simply as the “Flying Dahi Vada”. What began as a modest trick, tossing plates just a few feet high, has evolved into a mesmerising performance that draws crowds of food enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike.
Flying Vada From Indore’s Famous Sarafa Market Goes Viral
Joshi’s extraordinary serving technique involves launching a plate of dahi vada skyward — reaching heights of up to 12 feet — before deftly catching it without spilling a drop of the creamy yoghurt. A video that is now viral captures this spectacle.
“My journey started with tosses of just 2-3 feet, but years of dedicated practice elevated my skill to reach 12 feet,” Joshi explains as per a News18 article. As the plate spins dramatically in mid-air, spectators erupt in applause, cameras flash, and another viral moment is created.
This celebrated establishment traces its origins to 1965, when a single dahi vada cost merely 40 paise. Though today’s serving commands ₹70, the signature taste remains gloriously unchanged. Joshi’s creation distinguishes itself through its generous size and exceptionally soft texture — larger and more tender than typical varieties, offering a melt-in-the-mouth experience that customers find irresistible.

The culinary magic lies in the harmonious combination of rich, cooling yoghurt, tangy tamarind chutney, and a delicate sprinkle of sendha masala. This perfectly balanced medley creates a flavour profile that lingers long after the final bite, ensuring patrons return time and again.
The viral video received a number of comments affirming the legacy of the establishment. There were many who said that this Dahi Vada was the best in Indore. There were a couple of comments that questioned the necessity of such an act, however, most agreed that it was fun to watch.
