Delhiwalo, we have some news for you all! The Delhi government is considering lowering the legal drinking age for beer from 25 to 21. This move could bring the city in line with several other major metros and its neighbouring cities. While the proposal is still under discussion, it has sparked curiosity about how Delhi’s drinking laws compare with those of other Indian cities.
Delhi Govt Considers Lowering Beer Drinking Age To 21
According to Hindustan Times, Delhi may lower the permissible drinking age for beer from 25 to 21. This suggestion was proposed during a high-level committee, which is drafting the Capital’s new excise policy, and was headed by Minister Parvesh Verma. As per the report’s source, an initial draft is currently under work for this proposal and will be presented to the concerned authorities in another four months.
It is to be noted that Delhi’s legal drinking age for beer is higher than in nearby NCR cities. While Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad legally allow people to drink at 21, the age limit for drinking in Delhi is 25. According to the authorities, reducing this age limit could help curb black market sales, which often involve unsafe or illicit liquor. Furthermore, it will also protect the state’s revenue.

Legal Drinking Age In Other Metro Cities
So, the drinking age in Delhi is 25, but what about other metropolitan cities? In India, drinking age laws are set at the state level. That’s why, while Noida and Gurugram are part of NCR, their legal drinking age is 21, according to Uttar Pradesh and Haryana’s rules.
Interestingly, in Mumbai, you can drink beer and wine after turning 21, but you need to be at least 25 to consume strong liquor like whiskey, vodka, rum, and basically any other liquors with higher levels of alcohol. In Bengaluru, the legal drinking age is 21; which was revised in 2023.
