Eating with hands has long been a part of Indian culture, but many people avoid it, calling it unhygienic. Now, Dr Karan Rajan, a UK-based NHS surgeon and Instagram creator known for sharing health-related videos, has revealed science-backed insights that shed new light on the practice.

In his Instagram clip, he mentioned that eating with hands is scientifically known to improve digestion. This is because it makes us slow down naturally, which promotes mindful eating and gives us more time to chew. More chewing means more saliva, stomach acids, and enzymes that help “prime” the gut for digestion.

Dr Karan Rajan also said that using your hands can make you feel more satisfied with food while preventing overeating. He added that eating from clean hands can also expose us to harmless microbes in food, which train the immune system and help it better distinguish between harmful and harmless bacteria. He says, “This is basically a mini workout for your gut-immune axis.”

Fingertips: Nature’s Thermometer

The surprising benefits don’t stop here. The doc also mentioned that our fingertips act as “nature’s thermometer”, gauging the heat of food much better than our mouths, saving us from burning the inside of our mouth. Calling fingertips the “digestion joysticks” of the body, Dr Karan Rajan ended the video by stressing the importance of one simple step before eating, which is: “wash your hands.”

Many of his followers agreed with his reasons and shared their thoughts. One user said, “Basically follow Indian eating traditions,” pointing out that eating with hands has always been a tradition in the country. While many praised him, one user also wrote a funny comment saying, “I started doing this and it’s amazing. It just took me 4 and a half hours to eat my soup.”
