Not Alcohol, This Social Drink Could Be Increasing Risk Of Depression In Women, Reveals Study

Mental and physical health are closely linked. What we eat or drink can significantly impact our mood and behaviour. Most of us think alcohol might be the biggest contributor, but did you know that a non-alcoholic drink can also affect mental health and increase the risk of depression, particularly in women? Read on to know what it is and why.

As per a German study published in JAMA Network on September 24, 2025, increased consumption of soft drinks is related to depression. At parties, some people avoid alcohol and instead opt for soft drinks or sodas. But now, these seemingly harmless drinks are in the spotlight for the wrong reason! Researchers say that these drinks, which are high in sugar, can affect our gut microbiome, and since our digestive system and brain health are strongly connected, it can influence our mental health. The study also found that the effects are particularly seen in women.

As per a report by Hindustan Times, the study showed that women who consumed soft drinks had a 17% higher chance of developing depression. Men, however, did not show a strong link between soda/soft drink consumption and depressive symptoms. The research was based on data from 932 adult participants. Scientists also pointed out that hormonal differences and the immune systems make men and women respond differently to food and drinks.

How Gut Health Links To Depression

The same study revealed that soft drink consumption can affect the gut microbiome, which is the living ecosystem of microbes in our gastrointestinal tract. It includes bacteria, fungi and more that help our body maintain good health. The researchers said that women who consumed more soft or sugary drinks had a type of bacteria called Eggerthella, which has been linked to a higher risk of depression in women. Shocking, right?

Soft drinks are available everywhere: parties, restaurants and even at home. We often reach out for one glass without much thought. We already know they are high in sugar and linked to obesity and other diseases. But this new study now adds a new concern: depression.

Completely avoiding soft drinks may not be possible, but being mindful of consumption can help. Always remember that there are healthier alternatives available, too.
