A pumpkin grower from the United Kingdom has set a new world record after growing a giant pumpkin weighing 1,295.8 kg. Ian Paton, a plant nursery owner and experienced gourd grower from Hampshire, has claimed the Guinness World Records title for growing the heaviest pumpkin in the world. Scroll down to learn more.

Ian Paton Breaks His Own World Record With 1,295.8 Kg Pumpkin

According to the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC), the record-breaking pumpkin was weighed on October 3. Following a suggestion from his son, Paton named the giant squash Bagheera, after the black panther from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. With Bagheera, Paton has surpassed his previous record for growing the heaviest pumpkin. According to Guinness World Records, the latest specimen is almost 20 kg heavier than the pumpkin he grew previously. His earlier giant pumpkin, named Muggle, may have lost the heavyweight title, but it continues to hold the record for the largest pumpkin by circumference, measuring 649.8 cm. Bagheera has a circumference of 596.9 cm.

Speaking about the effort involved in growing the record-breaking pumpkin, Paton told Guinness World Records that he spent up to six hours a day tending to it for two months. He said the process involved a lot of work, but he managed to see it through.

Paton also shared advice for people interested in growing giant pumpkins. He recommended starting the plants in a greenhouse, as this gives them an early start and a longer growing season to reach their full potential.

Giant Pumpkin Bagheera Received Up To 590 Litres Of Water Daily

Growing a pumpkin of this size requires considerable care, especially during hot weather. Paton revealed that when temperatures inside the greenhouse reached 40°C, the plants received up to 130 gallons, or around 590 litres, of water every day. That is almost equivalent to filling three full-sized bathtubs. Despite already holding the world record, Paton has his sights set on an even bigger pumpkin. He told Guinness World Records that he wants to continue competing and hopes to grow a pumpkin weighing 3,000 lb, or approximately 1,361 kg.
