According to a survey published in Indian Medical Gazette in 2015, about 80 per cent of Indians are protein deficient. February 27 is noted as World Protein Day. It is celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of the nutrient and its health benefits. Driving his own food awareness campaign, FoodPharmer Revant Himatsingka distributed chaas (buttermilk) to the underprivileged in Kolkata.
FoodPharmer Distributes Chaas On Kolkata Streets To Raise Awareness
Revant is an ex-McKinsey and Wharton MBA graduate. He is driving India’s health revolution by educating all through his info-educational social media posts. Through his ventures and campaigns like Label Padega India he is key to raising label awareness in an otherwise ill-informed community of food consumers in India.
Recently, Revant took to the streets of Kolkata (his hometown) to distribute chaas (buttermilk). In a story posted on his Instagram handle, he can be seen filling up plastic glasses held by underprivileged people on the streets. Right from rickshaw-pullers (Kolkata still has a handful of hand-pulled rickshaws) to young kids, people can be seen enjoying the drink.
“80% of India is protein deficient. This deficiency is even more in the poor which results in millions of stunted children. Instead of giving Parle G to the needy, I recently conducted a buttermilk (chaas) drive in Kolkata,” writes Revant in the next story.
“While Chaas is not high in protein, it is a decent source of protein and the best part is that it is very affordable. I have decided to do a monthly chaas drive to promote protein consumption in India,” writes Revant.

What Is Indian Protein School?
Back in November 2024, Himatsingka took to Instagram to announce the Indian Protein School—his project to make Indians protein literate. The buttermilk drive is part of it for which he is also seeking support from all. “I would love to see many of you conducting this drive in your own cities. If you want to join me in a drive, or lead your own, you can email me,” he calls for help in the story.
The fact that they used plastic glasses for the drive wasn’t a missed detail. “Next time, we will try to do better” he was quick to point out.
