Foreigners, Your International Driver’s License Now Has A 1-Year Limit In Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia recently issued new clarifications with respect to the conditions under which foreign visitors are allowed to drive in the country using international driving licenses. Issued by the General Directorate of Traffic, a one-year limit has been set for foreign drivers using such foreign or International driving license. Here’s all you need to know about this important update.

1-Year Limit Set For International Driving License

As revealed in a report by the Gulf News, visitors who use an international foreign license in the kingdom are allowed to drive for up to one year from their date of entry or until the license expires. Whichever of these happens first will be applicable. However, it is important to note that the license must correspond to the category of the vehicle, which is being driven. Not to mention, these foreign licenses must be translated by an accredited body. This will, in turn, ensure that there is clarity of information and accuracy in details.

At this point, it’s worth mentioning that this rule does not apply to citizens from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. So, for GCC residents also the traffic department has confirmed the rule. It has been confirmed that they can drive in Saudi Arabia with their valid license, which has been issued in their home country.

They do not require a temporary Saudi license and can continue to use their license until its full validity period. However, the authority clarifies that the international driving permits, which have been issued within the GCC countries, are not valid for cross-border driving within GCC member nations. This also includes Saudi Arabia.
