5 Years After Being Gutted By Fire, Notre Dame Cathedral Restored
On April 15, 2019, the world saw how a catastrophic fire destroyed the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. While the main bell towers were safe, the cathedral’s roof and spire were ravaged by flames. Back then, it looked almost impossible to restore the glorious 12th-century cathedral. But as they say, never say never! On Friday, France unveiled the first glimpse of the now-restored Notre Dame Cathedral with new interiors.

Back then, 500 firefighters had to step in to put out the fire to save the cathedral. It took craftsmen from all over France to work on the site for five years to bring the 850-year-old mediaeval cathedral back to life. French President Emmanuel Macron visited the cathedral and showed the world its transformation. According to NDTV, the Notre Dame Cathedral will reopen to the public on December 8, 2024.
Addressing the people gathered during the unveiling of the iconic cathedral, Emmanuel Macron said in French, “The burning of Notre Dame was a national wound and you were its remedy, restoring it through determination, hard work and commitment.” He lauded and thanked all the people who worked hard to bring the monument back to life.

After the restoration, the once soot-covered walls of Notre Dame Cathedral now boost its true colours, Lutetian limestone. These colours make the interiors glow when the sunlight enters through the newly installed stained-glass windows. The nave of the cathedral has been restored completely.

As per reports, to begin the restoration, the workers first had to clean over 42,000 sq meters of stone. The most complex work was the restoration of the grand organ, which took over almost two years. The 29 chapels around the nave and choir have been revived with intricate murals and vibrant motifs. Now, each chapel tells a unique story through its designs and themes.
