Free For Locals, 1 Euro For Tourists; Rome May Implement Ticketing System At Trevi Fountain To Curb Overtourism

As a 90’s kid, my first glance at Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain was through my favourite film The Lizzie McGuire Movie. On a school trip, the protagonist Lizzie (played by Hilary Duff) makes a wish at Trevi Fountain and tosses a coin into the water. Years later, I was fortunate to experience the same. The 18th-century Baroque masterpiece continues to be a magnet for tourists like myself. However, amid rising over-tourism concerns, Rome is mulling over introducing a ticketing system at Trevi Fountain.

Rome May Introduce Ticketing System At Trevi Fountain

As per a report by Hindustan Times, Rome is considering serious steps to preserve the sanctity of the monument and control burgeoning crowds. The square surrounding Trevi Fountain is witnessing a sea of visitors, flocking daily to toss coins and make wishes. It’s often so packed that getting a clear view of the 18th-century monument itself is quite a task. There have also been tourists eating pizzas and gelatos right in front of the monument instead of giving it the respect it deserves.

A sight many Romans find troubling as the historic monument is held in great reverence. Many lean on the ancient marble callously. To tackle these growing issues, officials are planning to implement a ticketing system. While visiting the monument would be free of cost for locals, this may no longer be the case for tourists. Tourists may have to pay a symbol one-euro fee to get access to the monument.

This is not a money-making scheme but rather a move to restore order and ensure visitors treat the monument with respect. Officials find it a necessary and unavoidable step to safeguard Trevi Fountain’s charm amid record tourism numbers. Do note that this idea is still in its early stages as authorities in Rome understand the urgency of implementing it soon. The city’s tourism numbers are expected to peak in 2025. So, the need for implementing sustainable tourism practices, especially at Trevi Fountain cannot be dismissed by officials.

The proposed ticketing system at the Trevi Fountain aims to preserve its cultural gems and ensure future generations can experience its magic. Nestled at a junction of three roads, this fountain apart from being beautiful holds a legend. Tossing a coin over one’s shoulder and making a wish will not just fulfil one’s wish but also guarantee one’s visit back to Rome.

So, when are you planning to visit The Trevi Fountain?
