On June 12, a London-bound Air India plane crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, and according to the latest reports, only one passenger survived the crash. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the many aviation disasters India has faced over the years — from deadly mid-air collisions and weather-related crashes to runway overruns at notoriously difficult tabletop airports. Here’s a look into some of the worst aviation accidents faced by the country over the years.

1. Kozhikode Air Crash (2020) – Air India Express Flight 1344 from Dubai crashed while landing in heavy rain at Kozhikode Airport. According to NDTV, the plane skidded off a wet runway and broke into two. The accident claimed 21 lives.

2. Mangaluru Air Crash (2010) – The Air India Express Flight 812 overshot the runway and plunged into a gorge. The aircraft burst into flames and resulted in 158 deaths.

3. Patna Air Crash (2000) – Alliance Air Flight 7412 crashed into a densely populated area of Patna due to loss of control while landing. The accident claimed 60 lives, including five on the ground.

4. Charkhi Dadri Mid-Air Collision (1996) – This fatal incident is often called the deadliest aviation disasters in the history of India. Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747 and Kazakhstan Airlines Ilyushin Il-76 collided mid-air in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana. Reportedly, all 349 people on both aircraft were killed in the fatal accident that occurred due to a communication lapse.

5. Aurangabad Air Crash (1993) – On April 26, an Indian Airlines flight crashed after take-off from Aurangabad in Maharashtra. It hit a truck and power lines during the crash and killed 55 people.

6. Imphal Air Crash (1991) – Another Indian Airlines Flight crashed near Imphal on August 16. This aviation disaster claimed the lives of all 69 on board.

7. Bangalore Air Crash (1990) – Indian Airlines Flight 605, an Airbus A320, crashed while approaching Bangalore’s HAL Airport. 92, of the 146 onboard, were killed.

8. Ahmedabad Air Crash (1988) – On June 21, Indian Airlines’ Boeing 737-200 crashed while approaching Ahmedabad. Around 133 people died in the accident.

9. Mumbai Air Crash (1978) – A Dubai-bound Air India flight plunged into the Arabian sea after take-off from Mumbai. All 213 onboard were declared dead.

10. Delhi Air Crash (1973) – An Indian Airlines Boeing 737-200 struck high-tension wires while attempting to land at Delhi’s Palam Airport amid severe weather conditions. The crash claimed 48 lives out of the 65 people on board.
