Food Items You Should Not Keep In Fridge According To Chef Pankaj Bhadouria

Chef Pankaj Bhadouria has answered the biggest question of all time – what food items should not be kept in the fridge? The MasterChef winner took to Instagram to share a list of 10 food items that one should avoid keeping in the fridge. So, here are these food items and the reason why she suggested this –

1. Bread: According to Chef Bhadouria, bread turns stale faster inside the fridge.
2. Tomatoes: Contrary to popular belief, tomatoes should not be kept in the fridge. The taste and texture of tomatoes change due to the cool temperature.
3. Honey: It can crystallise and turn thick and grainy inside the fridge.
4. Melons: Keep your melons at room temperature to ensure their antioxidants remain intact. Keeping them in the fridge can spoil melon’s taste, texture, and colour.
5. Potatoes: The starch in potatoes can turn into sugar inside the fridge. So, it’s best to keep them outside, according to Chef Pankaj Bhadouria.
6. Onions: Besides leaving behind an unpleasant smell, onions can get rotten faster inside the fridge.
7. Garlic: The cold temperature inside the fridge can cause garlic to sprout faster.
8. Banana: The taste, colour, and texture of bananas get spoilt inside the fridge.
9. Coffee: It can absorb the aroma of the other food items in the fridge and in turn, spoil its own taste because of it.
10. Olive Oil: The oil can crystallise and solidify when kept in the fridge.

Keeping food in the refrigerator can, sometimes, preserve and extend its shelf life. However, that’s not always the case! As explained by Chef Pankaj Bhadouria, certain food items don’t belong inside the fridge for the simple reason that not every food item can survive in cold temperatures. Sometimes it causes the texture, taste, and colour of the food to change.

In other cases, it can raise risks of bacterial contamination and mould. Food kept in the fridge can retain moisture, which is not suitable for all food items. To avoid this, you can keep food like cut fruits and vegetables in airtight containers.
