SITA, a global leader in air transport technology, is paving the way for a new era of air travel in India through its collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This transformative partnership is part of the larger DigiYatra initiative, a bold move by the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation to bring digital, paperless air travel experiences to millions of passengers.
SITA Is Revolutionising Indian Airports With DigiYatra
At the heart of this revolution lies SITA’s Smart Path technology. It is being installed at nine key Indian airports, including Visakhapatnam, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Indore, and Goa, among others. SITA’s biometric solutions will offer passengers a seamless, contactless journey from the moment they step into the airport.
The most exciting aspect of SITA’s Smart Path is its use of advanced facial recognition technology. Passengers will be able to move through security, boarding, and various other checkpoints with just a scan of their face. This contactless process eliminates the need for physical documents at multiple stages, resulting in reduced waiting times.
Supporting the initiative, SITA is also implementing Passenger Flow Management (PFM). It uses smart analytics to track and manage passenger movements throughout the airport. This system helps reduce congestion. It also ensures that travellers have a smoother journey, with fewer bottlenecks and better management of passenger traffic.

The Future Of Seamless Digital Travel In India
The introduction of SITA’s cutting-edge technology is part of the DigiYatra initiative. It was launched with a grand inauguration at Visakhapatnam Airport. Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Rammohan Naidu, and other dignitaries attended the event. In a country where over 20 million passengers have already benefitted from DigiYatra, the upcoming expansion to 28 airports in total will cover nearly 90% of India’s domestic flyers.
Sumesh Patel, President, APAC, SITA, emphasised the game-changing nature of this collaboration. “With a focus on delivering Digital Travel, improving airport efficiency, and future-proofing operations, India has a unique opportunity to revolutionise its airports with world-class infrastructure,” he said.
By using SITA’s biometric systems and agile solutions, the aim is to make air travel more seamless for passengers. It will also ensure that India’s airports remain competitive on the global stage.
As SITA continues to support India’s Make in India initiative, this partnership strengthens the country’s infrastructure.
