Delhites are experiencing a harsh time because of the incessant rainfall from the last week. Massive downpours in different parts of the national capital are breaking records and showing the most cruel side of the monsoon season. Contributing to the majority of the city’s water supply, the Yamuna River is extremely important in Delhi. And now it is becoming the biggest reason for concern.
Yamuna River Water Level Is Rising Rapidly
Heavy rainfall in North India is going beyond people’s estimation. For Wednesday night, the Central Water Commission estimated that the Yamuna River might swell and cross 207.99 metres. Unfortunately, the rainfall last night breached all these numbers and crossed 208.05 metres, according to a report by Hindustan Times. This broke the previous records and breached the highest water level for the first time in 45 years, according to a report by Business Today.

The situation turned worse as the Yamuna River crossed a level of 208.46 metres on Thursday morning at around 7 AM. Crossing these all-time high water levels, the swelling up of water level is turning out to be a massive distress among the government and residents.
Waterlogging Reported In Many Areas; Places Are Getting Inundated
With the rapid rise in the Yamuna River water level, low-lying areas of Delhi are facing the most consequences. Residents of places such as Chandgiram Akhada, Civil Lines, and the Nigam Bodh Ghat are experiencing a horrible time due to waterlogging. Residents of low-lying places in Delhi are shifting to new locations. The evacuation process in continuing for some days.

Flood water has also seeped through the ITO. The ring road near the ITO flyover is seeing the rush of the overflow of the high water level. Many places close to the Kashmere Gate are facing severe issues. From Monastery Market to Neeli Chhatri Temple to Vishwakarma Khadda Colony to Old Yamuna Bridge, several parts of Delhi are facing the worst times due to the water overflowing. People living near the Yamuna River are relocating. In fact, flooding has been reported near Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s house. Geeta Ghat, Mandawali, Garhi Mandu, Gandhinagar, ITO, and more are severely affected.
If the water level goes beyond the present mark, it will lead to flooding more bustling areas of Delhi.
