PM Modi Presents The Dignitaries Of Ghana With Special Gifts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now left Accra, the capital city of Ghana, after finishing the first part of his 5 nation tour. He will now head to Trinidad and Tobago for an official visit, as per Mint. This was PM Modi’s first visit to this West African country and the first by any Indian prime minister in more than 30 years. As part of the visit, PM Modi held talks with Ghana’s President John Mahama and discussed ways to boost economic and defence partnerships between the two countries. President Mahama also honoured PM Modi with “The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana”, which is the nation’s highest civilian award. PM Modi also shared the news of his visit on his official X account.

But apart from official meetings, one more thing stood out. PM Modi presented special Indian handcrafted gifts to the dignitaries he met in Ghana before departing for his next destination, as per TOI. From a soft pashmina shawl to Bidri vases, each item reflected India’s skilled craftsmanship, artisanal work and traditional industries.

Traditional Indian Gifts Presented To Dignitaries In Ghana

1. Fine Bidri Artwork Vase For The President of Ghana

PM Modi gifted a pair of Bidri artwork flower vases made in Bidar, Karnataka. Known for their rich black finish and fine silver inlay work, these vases represent a centuries-old metal craft. They are made from a zinc-copper alloy and feature floral engravings that add to their charm. The gift also symbolises harmony and Karnataka’s strong artisanal heritage.

2. Filigree Work Purse For The First Lady, Lordina Mahama

PM Modi gave Lordina Mahama, the First Lady, a delicate filigree purse. Made using the Tarakasi craft of Odisha, this purse features intricate floral and vine designs created with fine silver wires. This centuries-old technique reflects the region’s skilled handwork and attention to detail.

3. Kashmiri Pashmina Shawl For The Vice President of Ghana

Coming to the next gift, PM Modi gifted a soft and elegant pashmina shawl from Kashmir to Ghana’s Vice President. Woven from the fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat, the shawl is decorated with hand-embroidered floral and paisley patterns. It also involves detailed hand spinning and weaving work, showing artisanal skill behind it.

4. Miniature Elephant Ambawari For The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, received a miniature elephant ambawari from West Bengal. Made from synthetic ivory, this piece shows India’s regal past and royal traditions. It features a carved howdah (the seat on an elephant’s back), floral motifs, and detailed decorations.

Apart from the gifts, PM Modi also praised Ghana, calling it “the land of gold”, not just for what’s under its soil, but also for the warmth of its people, as reported by News18. He also described the growing friendship between India and Ghana as much sweeter than Ghana’s famous Sugarloaf pineapple.
