Saudi Arabia Announces Changes To Labour Laws

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently announced major changes towards labour law. As revealed by Arabian Business in its report, the aim is to enhance its stability and protect worker’s rights. These changes include the extension of maternity leave, paid leave for the death of a sibling, and even defined notice period for indefinite contracts. The Ministry of Human Resource and Social Development revealed that these amendments to several articles of the labour law have been approved by the cabinet session on August 6. It aims to make a more attractive work environment for employees! Not to mention, even achieve a sustainable development that aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

A Look Into These Changes

If you’re also wondering about these updates to the labour law, they are as follows.

  • Paid leave following the death of a sibling to be introduced.
  • Extension of maternity leave to 12 weeks.
  • Paid leave and leave of overtime wages are to be introduced.
  • The trial period for labour contracts is limited to 180 days.
  • Notice periods for termination of indefinite contracts are 30 days, if it has been initiated by the employees, and 60 days if initiated by the employers.

At this point, it’s worth mentioning that the aim of these amendments is to

  • Enhancing jobs stability
  • Protecting the rights of all parties involved in employment contracts
  • Development of human capital
  • Promotion of training opportunities for workers
  • Increasing job opportunities for citizens

As it happens, the ministry has also indicated that these new amendments were made after an extensive study. The study included more than 1,300 participants. They contributed their opinions and suggestions regarding the proposed amendments to the labour law through a survey platform.

Finally, these new amendments modify 38 articles, remove seven articles and addition of two new article article laws.
