Jammu, the gateway to the north, is getting a railway station worthy of its title! Under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the Jammu-Tawi railway station is undergoing a massive ₹450 crore makeover, and the transformation is nothing short of spectacular. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming upgrades and changes!
Jammu-Tawi Railway Station’s ₹450 Crore Revamp

One of North India’s busiest railway stations, the Jammu-Tawi railway station accounts for a daily footfall of 30,000 to 40,000 passengers. Now, it is all set to get a brand-new look inspired by Jammu’s heritage. This revamp isn’t just about giving the railway station a new look but also promises a futuristic travel experience for passengers with cutting-edge facilities.
This revamp project will involve an increase in platform capacity from the current 3 platforms to 7. Additional Divisional Railways Manager Rajiv Kumar Singh also shared with Hindustan Times about a new entrance on the Narwal side and a complete redesign of the trains’ yard.
The new Jammu-Tawi station will feature:
- A 72-meter-wide air concourse connecting all platforms along with a spacious waiting area and retail shops.
- Two-foot overbridges (each 12 meters wide) for seamless movement.
- Escalators and lifts for hassle-free access across platforms.
- Ballastless tracks for smoother train operations.
- A certified green building designed to accommodate traffic growth for the next 40-60 years.
Arriving and departing passengers will be separated in the new design, according to the Hindustan Times reports, to ensure clutter-free platforms and manage the rush of passengers at the station. Improved surfaces, clear signage, and digital displays will also offer convenience to travellers.
Expansion For A Smoother Ride
Jammu railway station has long suffered from congestion, especially during peak hours. To address this, the main station building is being expanded to 15,600 square metres. According to reports from the Hindustan Times, a brand-new 4,500-square-metre station building on the Narwal side is almost complete.
The train yard is also receiving a cutting-edge upgrade that will increase efficiency and safety by replacing the old mechanical interlocking system with an electronic one. Five washing lines will also replace the previous three for quicker train maintenance.
Over 60 trains are temporarily suspended from January 15 to March 6 for the revamp. With its heritage-inspired design and world-class facilities, the new Jammu railway station is set to become a model for modern Indian railway hubs.
