One of the best parts about this Indian city is how beautifully it continues to preserve centuries-old heritage. Recently, a social media user highlighted the similarities between buildings constructed decades back in Calcutta, now Kolkata, and different places worldwide.

1. Queens Mansion

If you have been to the bustling Park Street area, you must have seen an incredible representation of architecture standing tall in the middle of the city’s junction. It is the iconic Queens Mansion and shares a resemblance with Wall Buildings in London.

2. Kolkata Metropolitan Building

Nestled on Chowringhee Road, the Metropolitan Building is one of India’s first-ever departmental stores. Previously, it was called the Whiteaway Laidlaw department store.

3. Madho Bhawan

To witness a unique slice of breathtaking architecture in the ‘City of Joy’, you must visit Madho Bhawan. This heritage building is standing on the Mahatma Gandhi Road. Its biggest highlight is the octagonal shape you notice when you look high in the sky.

4. Raj Bhavan

Kolkata’s Raj Bhavan was constructed a long time ago in 1803. Its designs and frames are quite similar to Kedleston Hall in England.

5. Bascule Bridge

Like London, Kolkata is also home to Tower Bridge. Built in Kidderpore, this humongous bridge is connected with Garden Reach.

6. Victoria Memorial Hall

A trip to Kolkata is just incomplete without visiting Victoria Memorial Hall. Famous as one of Calcutta’s most renowned buildings, this historical museum’s architecture is quite similar to Ireland’s Belfast City Hall in different aspects.

7. Angel Of Victory

The 16-foot-high Angel of Victory stands tall on the central dome of Victoria Memorial Hall.

8. Calcutta High Court

Known as India’s oldest High Court, Calcutta High Court in Kolkata and Belgium’s Cloth Hall Ypres share a resemblance.

9. Armenian Church

Nestled in Central Kolkata, the Armenian Church of Holy Nazareth is the oldest church in the city. An Armenian from Persia constructed it long back in 1724.

10. St. Paul’s Cathedral

This breathtaking architecture in the ‘City of Joy’ witnesses a huge crowd during Christmas celebrations every year. Sharing a list of historical buildings in Calcutta, the X user pointed out similarities between Kolkata’s St. Paul’s Cathedral and England’s Canterbury Cathedral.

11. St. Andrew’s Church

London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields and Kolkata’s St. Andrew’s Church share a few commonalities in their architecture.

12. Chinatown Gate

A replica of London’s Big Ben is standing tall on the VIP Road in Kolkata. Its construction was completed in 2015.
