2. Hemis Monastery

The Hemis Monastery is considered the wealthiest as well as largest monastery in Ladakh. An abode for a plethora of fascinating sacred thangkas, statues and more, the monastery will take your breath away. It also has an annual festival with a vibrant showcase of colourful masks.

3. Alchi Monastery

Perched on the banks of the Indus River, Alchi Monastery is among the most ancient Buddhist learning centres in Ladakh. It houses intricate wall paintings from the 11th Century CE and is also known for its stunning wooden architecture.

4. Diskit Monastery

Diskit Monastery is located in the Nubra Valley and houses one of the largest Buddha statues in Ladakh. The Maitreya Buddha statue is 32 metres high or 106 feet tall and it faces down towards the Shyok River. This marvellous statue is a sight to behold.

5. Lamayuru Monastery

Its rugged terrain is unlike any other in the world and is often dubbed ‘Moonland.’ This is owing to its unique lay of the land that, especially at night, transforms into a lunar landscape, resembling the surface of the moon.

6. Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery is arguably one of the most popular in Ladakh. Its architecture is inspired by the Potala Palace in Lhasa and stretches across 12 storeys. It also houses a statue of Maitreya Buddha that is 40 feet tall.
