In the last few days, you might have heard about the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directing food businesses and e-commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) to remove claims of A1 and A2 types from the packaging of milk and other dairy products and websites. The latest update states that FSSAI has withdrawn its recent advisory. What led to the change in the decision? Let’s find out.

Here’s Why FSSAI Withdrew Advisory On Removal Of Claims For A1 & A2 Types Of Milk

On Monday, FSSAI announced about withdrawal of its advisory where food businesses and e-commerce Food Business Operators were asked to remove claims of A1 and A2 types of milk from their packaging. According to a report by Business Standard, the regulatory body pulled back its advisory to conduct more consultations and engagement with all the stakeholders.

Does this change in decision impact the packaging or claims of milk types? We have the simplest answer to this. The withdrawal of the advisory by FSSAI describes that all food business operators can easily market their milk and milk products including the claims of A1 and A2 types. The concerned companies can continue to put labels stating A1 and A2 types on different dairy products such as milk, butter, curd, and ghee. Also, they can sell these items to the customers, stored in packaging with claims of A1 and A2 types of milk.

FSSAI released its latest advisory on Monday. It stated that “The advisory dated August 21, 2024…stands withdrawn for further consultation and engagement with the stakeholders.” It is only a matter of time before the next advisory to mention the next changes for the kinds of packaging and claims mentioned on them.

How Are A1 And A2 Milk Types Different?

One of the primary differences between A1 and A2 milk types is the beta-casein protein composition. A1 milk is produced from cows of Western origin. Interestingly, this type is used the most. On the other hand, cows of Western origin are obtained from Indian-origin cows such as Gir, Sahiwal, and more.

Though A2 milk is perceived as a healthier option in comparison to A1 milk, proper research has yet to provide the actual truth.
