It’s a proud moment for India, as Indian Air Force pilot and astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla prepares to leave for the International Space Station (ISS) on June 10. He will be flying as part of the Axiom 4 mission in space. Among other essentials and belongings, Shukla is carrying a delicious selection of Indian sweets, including moong dal halwa, gajar ka halwa, aamras, and rice.

According to the Hindustan Times, Shubhanshu Shukla, aged 39 and originally from Lucknow, is one of four astronauts set to launch from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. They will dock approximately 28 hours after the launch. He’ll become the second Indian to pilot a spaceflight after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s 1984 mission, which created history.

His wife and son, currently in Florida, shared that he is quarantined but still talks to them daily on calls. His sister, Suchi, who is in India, revealed that Indian food is not allowed in the space due to its high spice content, but he’s received special permission to carry some of it with him. Which is why he would now be taking moong dal halwa, gajar halwa, aamras and rice with him to space.
Family Prays For A Successful Mission
Back home in Lucknow, Shukla’s father, Shambhu Dayal Shukla, said the family has organised a “Satyanarayan Swami Katha” and a hawan to pray for a successful mission. His mother is also quite proud and happy, and is continuously praying for his success, as per HT. His alma mater, City Montessori School in Lucknow, is also celebrating with a special ‘VyomNite’ carnival.

While the complete list of his belongings remains private, the allowance of Indian sweets in the space has already fascinated us. Can you believe someone is enjoying the plain old moong dal halwa and gajar halwa in zero gravity? No, right? However, everything aside, as Indians, we’re not only proud but also hoping for success for Shubhanshu Shukla.
