The Gambhira Bridge in Vadodara, Gujarat, collapsed at around 7:30 AM on Wednesday. At least 9 people have died and 6 people were found injured because of this incident. Rescue operations are still underway. Read on to know more.
Gambhira Bridge Collapse Claims 9 Lives
The Gambhira Bridge, which connects Anand and Vadodara in Gujarat, collapsed on July 9. It not only disrupted the traffic movement on the route but also resulted in at least nine deaths and left six people injured. Many vehicles fell into the Mahisagar River (Mahi River) after part of the bridge collapsed, The Indian Express reported.
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed that nine bodies were recovered and six people were rescued after the bridge collapsed. He also added that a team from the Roads and Buildings Department has been directed to the location to assess the situation and take necessary action.
Reportedly, Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya has stated that rescue efforts are underway, and teams from the Municipal Corporation, local swimmers, and boats are also being deployed. He also added that the authorities from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), Emergency Response Centre, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were also present at the scene.

Exact Cause Of Collapse Still Unknown
The Gambhira Bridge was constructed in 1985 and, reportedly, received regular maintenance checks when needed. As per the Minister of Gujarat, Rushikesh Patel, the exact cause of the sudden collapse is still unknown. He added that officials will carry out a probe.
It should also be noted that the Gambhira Bridge, which links the Vadodara and Anand districts in Gujarat, is 900 metres long with 23 piers. The collapse occurred around 7:30 AM on Wednesday. As per the police, the collapse occurred suddenly when a part of the bridge gave way. As a result, at least 4 vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar River, leading to multiple casualties and injuries.

Authorities are still carrying out rescue operations and are awaiting further details.
