We all learnt the names of the Indian states, Union Territories, and their capitals by heart as a kid. Now, it’s time to see how much of that information you have been able to retain.

Here’s A List Of  Indian States, UT’s And Their Capitals

States:

1. Andhra Pradesh

Recently on 31 January 2023, Visakhapatnam was declared the state’s capital.

2. Arunachal Pradesh

Named after Ita fort, Itanagar is Arunachal Pradesh’s capital city, known for being a rainy city.

3. Assam

Actually a locality in the city of Guwahati, Dispur is the capital of Assam.

4. Bihar

Founded by the king of Magadh in 490 BCE, it was then known as Pataliputra and was the capital of the empire as well.

5. Chhattisgarh

Superior educational institutions are known for being located in Raipur. An NIT, an IIM, an AIIMs, an NLU, and an IIIT are located in the city.

6. Goa

With over 7,000 bars to visit, Goa is the place the entire country wants to visit for a perfect beachy vacation.

7. Gujarat

Named after Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhinagar is the capital city of his birth state.

8. Haryana

Chandigarh is not only a shared capital between Haryana and Punjab, but it is also a Union Territory.

9. Himachal Pradesh

Dharamshala was designated as Himachal Pradesh’s secondary capital in March 2017. The first capital, Shimla, is a well-known tourist spot. The city serves as the terminus of the UNESCO-designated Kalka-Shimla railway line.

10. Jharkhand

The “city of waterfalls” label is another name for Ranchi. Famous waterfalls in Ranchi include Dassam Falls, Hundru Falls, and Hirni Falls.

11. Karnataka

Bengaluru is a significant Indian city and is referred to as the “Silicon Valley of India”. It is India’s third-most populous city. The city has a lovely climate all year long.

12. Kerala

At Thiruvananthapuram, there is a temple called Padmanabhaswamy which is one of the most valuable religious buildings in the world. Its vaults are filled with artefacts that are worth billions of dollars.

13. Madhya Pradesh

Many thousands of people perished in the horrific Bhopal Gas Disaster in December 1984. According to the 2021 Swachh Survekshan, Bhopal was the 14th cleanest city.

14. Maharashtra

The financial centre of India is Mumbai. Hindi and Marathi films are also produced in the city of dreams.

15. Manipur

Curiously, Manipur’s Imphal East and Imphal West districts share jurisdiction over the region of Imphal City.

16. Meghalaya

Shillong was referred regarded as the “Scotland of the East” by the British in the past. Shillong, like much of Meghalaya, experiences a lot of precipitation, with more than 110 wet days on average every year.

17. Mizoram

The 2011 census revealed that 93.63% of Aizawl’s population is Christian.

18. Nagaland

Similar to Aizawl, Kohima has a predominantly Christian population.

19. Odisha

The “temple city” of Bhubaneswar is home to numerous well-known Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain temples. The literacy rate in Bhubaneshwar (91.87%) is significantly higher than the national average (74.04 percentiles).

20. Punjab

Punjab and Haryana both have their capitals in this city known for its magnificent and modern architecture.

21. Rajasthan

Jaipur also referred to as the “pink city,” is the tenth most populated city in India. The most popular tourist route in India includes Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur as part of the Golden Triangle.

22. Sikkim

The city of Gangtok is well-liked by tourists. Gangtok has a very small population of about a little over 1 lakh, which is quite low for a capital city. The Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world, is clearly seen from Gangtok on clear days.

23. Tamil Nadu

Chennai, India’s sixth most populated city, is referred to as the “health capital” of the country. Chennai is often known as “the Detroit of India” because it is home to the majority of the country’s auto sector.

24. Telangana

Hyderabad is India’s fourth-most populous city and one of India’s IT cities with the quickest growth.

25. Tripura

The majority of people in Agartala speak Bengali. The eastern border between India and Bangladesh is not far from Agartala.

26. Uttar Pradesh

A significant Indian metropolis, Lucknow is situated in the Uttar Pradesh province’s Awadh area. The city is regarded as one of the “happiest” in India.

27. Uttarakhand

The renowned town in the hills, Mussoorie is only 30 kilometres from the core of the city of Dehradun, which is located in the Doon valley. The summer capital of Uttarakhand will be Gairsain. Yet, it is still developing its infrastructure.

28. West Bengal

Kolkata was the capital of British India for a long time and was generally considered a cultural capital.

Union Territories

1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are home to the Dermocheleys Coriacea, the largest sea turtle in the world. Andaman is home to India’s only active volcano. Its capital is Port Blair.

2. Chandigarh

The city of Chandigarh is actually named after the Chandi Devi Mandir.

3. Dadra and Nagar Haveli

It was self-governing and ran independently until 1961. Afterwards, it became a union territory of India in the same year, 1961. Silvassa’s Dudhni Lake is renowned for being called the “Kashmir of the West.”

4. Daman and Diu – Daman

Until 1987, Goa, ‘Daman, and Diu’  were considered a single territory. Later, Goa was declared a state. Daman is considered the union territory’s capital.

5. Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep’s capital Kavaratti Island is an essential Indian Navy Base for INS Deeprakashak, ever since the 1980s.

6. Delhi

Considered a Union Territory until 1991, the constitution changed it into the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

7. Puducherry

Earlier, the capital of Puducherry was Madras. Now, it has been changed to Puducherry, a town that celebrates Independence day on 16th August, a day later than the rest of the country.

8. Jammu & Kashmir

Rightfully known as Heaven on Earth, Kashmir is the epitome of nature’s beauty in every aspect.
