Sri Lanka has revived its online visa application system, aiming to boost tourism as the island nation’s economy recovers from recent challenges. The government announced on Thursday that the move is designed to streamline the process for visitors and support the crucial tourism sector. Tourists can now apply for visas online without incurring additional processing fees. This change follows a period of uncertainty regarding visa procedures, which has caused some difficulties for travellers planning to visit the tropical paradise.

The restoration of the previous online platform comes after a review of the visa application process. According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, the decision was made to address concerns raised by potential visitors.
In order to ensure a smoother experience for those wishing to explore Sri Lanka’s diverse attractions, the process has now been made more convenient. Sri Lanka is known for its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.

Why Was This Decision Taken By The Government?
Recent data from the central bank shows an encouraging trend, with approximately 1.19 million tourists visiting the island in the first seven months of this year. This represents a significant increase of 56 per cent compared to the same period in 2023.
This indicated a strong recovery in the tourism sector. The simplified visa application process is expected to further boost these numbers. Travellers can now easily obtain their visas through the official government website, eliminating potential hurdles.
Local tourism operators have welcomed the move, expressing optimism about its potential impact on their businesses. Many are hopeful that the streamlined process will encourage more spontaneous travel decisions and last-minute bookings.
