Indian Employee Shares German Workplace Habits

A social media creator, Simran Khokha, who works as a Product Manager in Germany, recently took to her Instagram to share her observations and explain how professional culture in Germany can feel very distinct for Indians, as they are used to more hierarchical and relationship-driven office environments.

In the caption of the post, Simran wrote, “I work as a Product Manager in Germany, and these office habits still surprise many professionals coming from India.” Talking about the work environment, she revealed one of the most different habits she noticed in German offices is that a manager who rejected your idea during a meeting a few minutes ago will still join the same employee for coffee. Disagreement in the office is often separated from personal relationships. Another habit that she found fun is that nobody is impressed with working late. Some teams can even raise questions about planning and prioritisation.

She further noted that employees often question whether a meeting is needed if the same discussion can be handled through email. Other than that, junior employees are encouraged to challenge senior leaders with data and facts, as the strongest argument generally carries more weight than job titles. Direct communication is another key feature of German workplaces, where a simple “no” is often considered a complete answer without the need for excessive politeness.

German Workplace Habits That Surprised Indians

She observed that employees treat their calendars as personal territory, with colleagues typically asking before scheduling time. Documentation is also highly valued, and many teams prefer written records over verbal discussions. She added that workers regularly block focus time on their calendars and are expected to protect it from interruptions.

Another difference she highlighted is the separation between professional and personal lives. Even after years of working together, many colleagues may choose not to connect with work contacts on personal social media platforms.

She further explained that influence in German offices is not always linked to visibility, as the quietest person in the room may often be the most respected expert. Meetings also tend to end exactly on time, with participants leaving immediately rather than staying for informal post-meeting discussions.

According to her, managers openly admitting that a topic falls outside their area of expertise is often viewed as a sign of professionalism rather than weakness. Teams may spend weeks discussing and evaluating decisions, but once consensus is reached, execution tends to happen very quickly.

She also noted that German workplaces place a strong emphasis on ownership and accountability, with clearly assigned responsibilities preferred over shared ownership. During interviews, candidates who ask thoughtful questions about strategy, processes, and challenges can often leave a stronger impression than those who focus solely on discussing themselves.

She said these are the kinds of workplace behaviours that are rarely mentioned in relocation guides but become apparent once people start working in Germany.
