Recently, the Air India group has revised its fuel surcharge on both domestic and international routes. This comes after a sharp rise in global fet fuel prices amid the ongoing war. Read on to know more about the new charges.
Air India To Revise Fuel Surcharge
According to a report by NDTV, the changes will take place on Wednesday, April 8, for the majority of routes. For routes like Europe, North America, and Australia, the surcharge will be effective April 10, 2026. The airline stated that the move comes after an approach taken by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which increased the domestic Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price hike at 25%.
For domestic routes, Air India has released a distance-based grid instead of a flat surcharge. Here’s the revised fuel surcharge:
- 0-500km distance – $299 (₹27, 777)
- 501-1000 km distance – $399 (₹37,068)
- 1001-1500 km distance – $549 (₹51,003)
- 1501-2000 km distance – $749 (₹69,584)
As per the airline, the new structure reflects the government’s decision to limit the ATF price rise and ensure that longer routes carry a proportionate surcharge. The revised fee will also apply to Air India Express flights.
The Rise In Charges For International Routes
According to the news portal, for international routes, the airline has imposed a sharper revision without any cap on international ATF prices. Air India also stated that the surcharge does not fully cover the rise in jet fuel costs. The airline continues to bear a part of the increase. As per the data from the International Air Transport Association, the global average jet fuel price increased to $195.19 (₹18,116) per barrel in March, which was $99.40 (₹9,197) per barrel at the end of February. Also, the crack spread, also called ‘refinery margins,’ jumped from ₹25.00 to ₹7500 per barrel in three weeks, which has made fuel one of the biggest cost pressures for airlines worldwide.

Passengers who booked tickets before the above dates will not bear the new surcharge. The new prices apply only if passengers change dates or routes and if the fare is recalculated. Air India also stated that it will review the surcharge periodically, depending on the fuel charges.
