Middle East Conflict Disrupts Global Sports: Matches Postponed, Athletes Stranded

Travel Chaos Hits Athletes Heading To Paralympic Games

One of the largest sporting events on the calendar has not been spared by the disruption.

Some athletes who were travelling to the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics Games have been unable to arrive in Italy due to flights being stopped at Middle East airports.

According to a report by Live Mint, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) also confirmed that it was in collaboration with organisers to assist affected athletes to identify other routes of transportation.

Authorities have reported that airspace shutdowns in several regions of the Middle East have been slackening or halting the arrival of athletes and team employees had been traveling through key regional airports.

In the case of competitors who are about to serve at the Paralympics, the slightest delay can ruin months’ worth of planning.

Tennis Tournament In Fujairah Cancelled

The tension has also stalled a professional tennis tournament in the UAE.

The ATP Challenger in Fujairah was cancelled due to a security alert that compelled authorities to stop the play. Later, the organisers opted to cancel the tournament completely due to safety issues.

In the meantime, the travel hiccups have stranded several players in the region.

Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, Russian stars who have just participated in the Dubai Tennis Championships, have been stranded in not being able to access California to take part in the Indian Wells Open. The ATP reported that it is keeping a close watch on the situation amid the efforts by players to reroute their travel.

Football Tournaments In The Region Halted

In football, disruption has been experienced in some of the most numerous ways.

Iran suspended all sporting activities permanently, even in the highest division of the Persian Gulf Pro League in the country, the top football league in Iran.

All domestic matches were also postponed by the Qatar Football Association until further notice. The move can impact a high-profile international friendly in March between Spain and Argentina in Doha. Bahrain, a neighbouring country, was no exception as it suspended its local football events in precaution.

On the continental level, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) cancelled various major matches between clubs in the Middle East.

Motorsport Events Now Under Review

There is also uncertainty in motor racing events.

The World Endurance Championship (WEC) delayed its season-opening event that was to be held at the Lusail Circuit, Qatar, on March 28. The organisers said a new date will be announced later in the season. The focus has shifted to Formula One as well.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) said that safety will inform decisions regarding future races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

The events are still present in the calendar, but authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation.

PV Sindhu Forced To Withdraw From All England Open

Individual athletes have already been hit by travel disruption. PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist and an Indian badminton star, pulled out of the All England Open after spending days at Dubai airport.Later, Sindhu came back safely to India and posted a message online confirming her presence in Bengaluru.
