Ahead of the 98th Academy Awards, Indian films are making their global presence felt! According to The Times of India, Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 and Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great are among the 201 feature films eligible for consideration at the 2026 Oscars.
This is exciting news for Indian film lovers and the entertainment industry alike. The 98th Academy Awards will be held on March 16, 2026, in Los Angeles, and if these films make it to the Best Picture shortlist, it will make the event even more thrilling for audiences in India!
Kantara won over movie lovers for its portrayal of the origins of Daiva worship in Tulu Nadu, with Rishab Shetty’s performance earning widespread praise. Tanvi The Great, directed by Anupam Kher, tells the story of a young girl with autism who aspires to join the Indian Army, drawing inspiration from her late father’s service.

Eligibility Criteria For Nominations
According to NDTV, to be eligible for an Oscar nomination, films have to meet additional requirements beyond general entry. This usually includes a theatrical run and submission of the confidential Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry (RAISE) form. To qualify, films must meet at least two of the four inclusion standards and have a theatrical run in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets within 45 days of their 2025 release.
Both Kantara Chapter 1 and Tanvi The Great have fulfilled these conditions, and we are keeping our fingers crossed for these movies!
