On June 20, the skies above Barcelona witnessed an extraordinary spectacle. As part of the ‘Bombing of Poems’ event, a helicopter showered 100,000 poems centred on the theme of freedom over the area surrounding Barcelona Cathedral.
According to Reuters, the Bombardeig de Poesia (Bombing of Poems) was organised by the Chilean art collective Casagrande to mark 50 years since the end of Spain’s dictatorship. The initiative transformed a location once scarred by war into a powerful symbol of remembrance, culture, and peace.
The event carried deep historical significance for the natives. Between 1937 and 1939, during the Spanish Civil War, Barcelona endured 1,903 bomb attacks that claimed more than 2,700 lives and injured around 7,000 people. Nearly nine decades later, the city’s skies were filled not with bombs, but with verses.
Thousands of poems fluttered down over the Gothic Quarter, turning its streets into a living canvas of words and transforming a painful chapter of destruction into a moving tribute to memory, hope, and freedom.

Why Was This Significant?
According to Catalan News, the Cathedral district, where the Bombing of Poems event took place, was among the areas most severely affected by aerial attacks during the Spanish Civil War. In 1938 alone, the district was targeted twice. The first bombing claimed 42 lives, including 20 children.
Just a few months later, the area was struck again, resulting in hundreds of deaths. The poems dropped during the event, written in both Spanish and Catalan, reflected on themes of freedom, memory, and the lasting consequences of those tragic attacks, highlighting their profound impact on the people and the city.
