Gokhale Bridge is a crucial connector in Mumbai city. It creates a connection between Andheri East and Andheri West and this route will be closed from midnight on 7 November. The route is shut for pedestrians as well as vehicles. The Mumbai Traffic police has provided alternative routes to the Gokhale Bridge on Friday. Due to the shutdown of this bridge, there will surely be a rise in traffic on other routes.
Why Did Gokhale Bridge Get Shut?
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took the decision to shut down the Gokhale Bridge connecting Andheri East and Andheri West. The reason behind closing such a crucial connector is to work on the reconstruction project of the damaged parts. Hence, commuters will now have to choose alternative routes. The Mumbai Traffic police enlisted 6 different routes instead of using the Gokhale bridge.
Mumbai Police took to Twitter to announce the closing down of Gokhale Bridge at Andheri from midnight of 7 November.

Here Are The Alternative Routes You Can Take:
The alternate routes provided by the Mumbai Traffic police are:
- Andheri’s Andheri subway
- Jogeshwari’s Balasaheb Thackeray flyover
- Vile Parle’s Captain Gore flyover Bridge (Parle Bridge)
- Khar subway
- Khar’s Milan subway
- Goregaon’s Mrunaltai Gore flyover
Traffic jam is immense and congested in Andheri already. And with the closing of this bridge, it is expected that the traffic jam will increase even more to a huge extent. Different alternate routes have already been provided. But Mumbaikars are quite afraid of the extreme jam from Monday.

The bridge had to get shut at such short notice with immediate effect because a recent structural audit said that this route is in a very bad state. Ameet Satam is the BJP legislator of Andheri and according to a report by Indian Express, Ameet Satam asked Iqbal Singh Chahal, the chief of BMC to shut the bridge as soon as possible.
Gokhale Bridge has led to many accidents in the past. Back in 2018, a part broke down and 2 people lost their lives during this horrible accident. Though BMC started the reconstruction after the collapse incident, the bridge was still open for commuters partially.
