Trial Run For India’s 1st Hydrogen-Powered Train Soon

Indian Railways has touched another milestone. According to The Times of India, the Indian Railways will unveil India’s first hydrogen-powered train soon and a trial run for the same is slated for next month. The trial of this zero-emission train will take place in Haryana and is being considered a major step towards eco-friendly transportation in the country. The train is expected to fully run on track by March 2025.

The Research, Design, and Standard Organisation (RDSO) has developed the design for India’s inaugural hydrogen train. The design of the train is now complete and after all the formalities are cleared, the trials for the same will begin soon. A toy model of this train was displayed at the sixth edition of the InnoRail Exhibition and International Conference recently and it garnered a lot of appreciation there.

As per reports, the launch of the hydrogen-powered train aligns with India’s ambition of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Also, with this launch, India will join the small list of countries that have initiated the use of hydrogen as a fuel for trains.

As per reports, India’s first hydrogen-powered train will run at a speed of 110 kmph and will have a total of 10 coaches. Out of these 10, eight will be passenger coaches and the other two will be hydrogen-powered engine coaches. According to RDSO, these trains will be powered by fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity. It is to be noted that they will not emit any smoke or harmful pollutants. Furthermore, this train will make 60% less noise than diesel engines.

According to reports, the train will have a capacity to ferry 2,638 passengers. They are being built at Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. The train can be fueled with 400 kg of hydrogen. With this, it can run four trips of 375 kilometres between Sonipat and Jind.
